Filling the EcoBin and introducing students to the school programme

When bins are empty a ‘blue team’ of motivated students is established to motivate the school to recycle plastic waste. The schoolprogramme teaches students about the consequences and solutions against plastic waste.

  • Th bin that’s currently used is quickly filled.

  • The current bin is a bottle shaped metal bin. To nudge students to use this bin, the attractiveness of the been should be improved.

Emptying, sorting and transporting plastic waste

The EcoBin is emptied by River Cleanup employees and the blue team helps with sorting the plastic bottles and cups; also, labels and caps are removed. The plastic waste is transported in musquito nets using a tricycle as a means of transportation.

  • The logistic process is not efficient enough because not enough plastic is transported in one time. Also there are no nets or bags inside the bin which means it takes more time to transfer the bottles from the bin to a net for transport. Labels and caps get removed but further sorting at school could make the process more efficient afterwards.

  • Nets in which plastic waste gets transported are not reusable.

Based on the amount of kilos plastic waste the school gets paid for their effort. The plastic waste is sorted, baled and recyled by River Cleanup and it’s partners. By understanding the recycling process insights where gathered on how to design a good bin.
